Guitarra Electrica / Electric Guitar

La guitarra electrica es un objeto que prestigia a su poseedor, transmitiendo una serie de connotaciones positivas a su dueño. No esperamos encontrarla en la casa de un político de derecha, por ejemplo. Y si lo hiciesemos, sería una sorpresa agradable - “Es humano, le gusta el rock” nos diriamos tal vez- lo cual, por supuesto, sería un error. Como poseedor de una guitarra electrica soy el primero en decir que esta no me hace -ni me hizo- más cool, ondero, moderno o sensible. Incluso, diría, funciona al revés, recordandome todo el tiempo mi incapacidad para llegar a ser lo que la guitarra espera de mi. 

The electric guitar is an object which gives prestige to its owner, transmitting a series of positive connotations about him. We do not expect to find it in the house of a political right, for example. And if we did, it would be a pleasant surprise - “He’s human, like the rock” we might say-which, of course, would be a mistake. As a owner of an electric guitar I’m the first to say that it doesn’t - and didn’t- make me cooler, hipster, modern or sensitive. Even, I would say, it runs the other way around, reminding me the whole time my incapacity to reach what the guitar expected of me.

Cojín Tigre (pieza) / Tiger Cushion (bedroom)

¿Qué tiene en común un set televisivo con una pieza en un departamento piloto? Pues que ninguno parece habitado; lo cual es particularmente lamentable en el caso de la televisión, ya que rompe cualquier buena fe que el televidente pueda tener en la credibilidad de la historia. La razón detrás de esta carencia (por llamarla de algún modo) es también la causa de que este cojín con un estampado felino repose sobre la cama. La construcción del andamiaje de objetos que nos rodea es un proceso lento (comienza desde nuestro primer juguete) y siempre tiene un sentido, aunque no es necesariamente racional. Las piezas de la televisión en cambio son construidas desde una cierta racionalidad: si el personaje es un adolescente conflictuado, tendrá posters de Guns’n’Roses, si es un psicopata, dormirá en un catre, etc. Y esto es una buena comparación entre la vida como la vivimos (con una dosis de caos) a como se nos muestra que debe ser vivida (un orden dado). 

What has in common a TV set bedroom with a model department? Well, that neither seems inhabited, which is particularly regrettable in the case of television, because it breaks any good faith the viewer may put on the credibility of the story. The reason behind this wanting (to call it in some way) is also the reason why this cushion with a pattern cat rests on my bed. The construction of the scaffolding of objects around us is a slow process (starting from our first toy) and always has meaning, but it is not necessarily rational. TV parts instead are built from a certain rationality: if the character is a conflicted teen, you must have Guns’n’Roses postersif you are a psychopath, you must sleep on a cot, and so on. And this is a good comparison between life as we live it (with a dose of chaos) and as we are shown it’s supossed to be lived (a given order).

Reloj de Escritorio / Desk Clock

La casa de los padres de César, un amigo mío, estaba decorada con espejos y relojes en cada pared disponible. Lo recuerdo porque me llamó mucho la atención la insistencia en el motivo: estaban en todas partes. La interpretación más obvia es que el espejo es un extensor de espacio mientras el reloj funciona como un parcelador de tiempo, y ya que desde Einstein sabemos (o nos dicen que sabemos aunque en realidad no entendamos) que el tiempo y el espacio son dos manifestaciones de lo mismo, es lógico que espejos y relojes compartan su lugar en las murallas de esta casa de Maipú, pues el espejo también circunscribe el espacio (como una ventana) y el reloj proyecta el tiempo (en el podemos ver, literalmente, el tiempo que ha pasado y aquel que vendrá). Esta versión del reloj, un fino reloj de escritorio, lo tengo yo en comodato, pues en realidad pertenece a Magdalena y para que todo tenga sentido, lo he dejado junto a mi selección de libros clásicos, lo cual parece apropiado.

Caesar’s -who is a friend of mine- parents house, was decorated with mirrors and clocks on each available wall . I remember it because I was struck by the emphasis on the motif: they really were everywhere. The most obvious interpretation would be that the mirror is an extensor of space while the clock functions as a parceler of time, and as we know since Einstein (although we usually do not really understand it) time and space are two manifestations of the same, it stand to reason that mirrors and clocks share their place in the walls of this house of Maipu, because the mirror also works as a measuring of space (like a window) and the clock projects time (where we can literally see the time that has happened and the one to come). This version of watch, one fine desk clock on loan from Magdalena, rests near my selection of classic books, to give it a good setting.

Lampara / Lamp

Uno de los pocos objetos que me han acompañado desde que vivía con mis padres en La Florida. Originalmente la usaba sobre el escritorio fiscal que padre había comprado en el Bío-bío para iluminar mis noches de estudio. Lo que equivale a decir que no la ocupé mucho. Pero ya viviendo solo se convirtió en mi lampara de velador y ahora sí la uso con más asiduidad, aún cuando el interruptor está malo y se apaga solo. Su espacio al lado de mi cama, en todo caso, ha sido fuente de conflicto, pues no combina ni con el velador ni con la otra lampara. Pero ha probado ser más resiliente que su competencia y ahí sigue, iluminando la lectura nocturna.

One of the few objects that have been with me since I lived with my parents in La Florida. Originally used upon the fiscal desk that father had bought in the Bio-Bio to light my nights of study. Which is to say that I didn’t use it much. But since living alone it became my bedside lamp and now I do use it, even thought the switch is malfunctioning and it turns itself off. Its space next to my bed, in any case, has been a source of conflict, since it doesn’t combine with either the night table or the other lamp. But it has proved more resilient than its competition and is still there, illuminating my reading nights.
