Caja de Fósforos / Match box
Este pequeño paralelepípedo construído a base de madera y cartón es un clásico chileno. Su simpleza y familiaridad esconde detalles sensuales que en el reencuentro, en el análisis, reaparecen con viveza. Como la rugosidad del material que lo recubre, por debajo de la etiqueta, color “azul paquete de vela”; o el inconfundible sonido que hace la cajita que sostiene los fósforos cuando la abrimos deslizandola, o las marcas dejadas por los fósforos en el área de raspe, así como su inconfundible olor. Y por supuesto el diseño gráfico, la mitológica cordillera nevada con el texto “Los Andes”. Objeto pequeño y entrañable, fácil de pasar por alto pero signo patente -si es que existe tal cosa- del alma nacional.
This small parallelepiped, built with wood and cardboard, is a Chilean classic. Its simplicity and familiarity hides sensual detail that when watched closely, in an analysis, comes back vividly. Such as the roughness of the material that covers it, and its “candle package blue” color or the unmistakable sound that the box holding the matches makes when you slide it open, or the marks of the matches in the striking area, as well as its distinctive smell. And of course the graphics: the mythological snow-capped mountains with the “Los Andes” copy. Small and endearing object indeed, easy to overlook but vivid sign of the national soul (if there is such a thing).
Colgador / Clothes hanger
Pese a ser un objeto de invención reciente (siglo XIX), el colgador de ropa es actualmente uno de esos items que, con toda seguridad, están en el 97% de los hogares. Me imagino que ese tres por ciento está compuesto por hippies recalcitrantes, pueblos aborigenes repartidos por el mundo y otros. La pregunta de rigor sería como guardaba la ropa la gente antes que se popularizara el colgador. Y relacionado con esto: cuando el colgador finalmente llegó al hogar moderno, ¿quién instalaba el palito del cual se cuelgan en los armarios? ¿quizás era un servicio anexo a la venta del colgado (Cómo una promoción del tipo “lleve 5 colgadores y de regalo instalamos el palo del cual colgarán”)? ¿Qué fue primero? Porque si fue el palito, ¿qué se colgaba en él? Y si fue el colgador ¿donde lo colgaban? Preguntas preguntas.
Even though it’s a relatively recent invention (XIX century) the clothes hanger has become one of those items that’s in 97% of households worldwide. I imagine that the other three percent belongs to hardcore hippies, local tribesmen all around the world, etc. The question here is: how people stock its clothing before this invention? And related to that: when the hanger finally arrived at the modern home, who was in charge of installing the bar from where it hangs? Was it a kind of combo (like a “take 5 hangers and the bar installation is free” kind of thing)? What came before?, because if it was the bar, then what was it used for? and if it was the hanger, where did they hang it from? Questions, questions.
servilletero / napkin holder
Me gustan los objetos que se ofrecen a su función con este nivel de entrega y simplicidad. Su fealdad es redimida por su humildad (de hecho, tiene un aire al Santo Grial en Indiana Jones y la última cruzada). Cuando lo miro me pregunto ¿cómo estará unido el semicirculo a la base? ¿qué técnica artesanal fue usada para construirlo?, pero todavía tiene pegado en su base el sticker de homecenter, así que mejor paso a otra cosa.
I like objects thrown to its function with this level of commitment and simplicity. Its ugliness is redeemed by its humility (in fact, it has an air of the Holy Grail in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). When I look at it I wonder how the semicircle was attached to the base, which technique was used to craft it?, but still stuck in its base there’s a Homecenter sticker, so I best amuse myself with something else.
